Huck life fun off of the course...
Huck life fun off of the course...

What a year it has been so far.  Somehow disc golf and the experience of being a touring professional, keep getting better.  We managed to fit in some other activities when we weren’t on the disc golf course.

Fenway Park
After the Vibram Open in Massachusetts, we were able to catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. The Sox lost but Manny Ramirez went yard in his last game for the Sox.
It was all the usual suspects : Avery, Val, Melo, along with Courtney Peavy, Kevin McCoy and little Ryan McCoy, Danial Marcus, Schultz and Moose Lubeck.  We did some seat hopping and Melody and I ended up fifth row behing home plate for a few innings.  Fenway is quite small and quaint.  Most of the seating had decent views and you could almost feel the “Sultan of Swat” and the history that Fenway gleams with.  One of the groups most talked about topics was the fun accent the Bostonians used.

Cedar Point
After Worlds, it was time to revisit Cedar Point (the World‘s best amusement park).  Again the usual crew was there and Val’s childhood friend.  It wasn’t very busy since kids were finally in school. We rode all the good ones: Millennium 300, Dragster 420, Raptor, Wicked Twister and the newest ride Maverick.  That was a nice addition to an awesome day.  The first hill was an inverted drop and the rest is too good to spoil.  Overall, Cedar Point is #1, you must try it!

Mt.Dew Tour
We finally returned home to Oregon after Worlds.  Melody, my friend Orion and myself scored VIP passes from the “Chains” producer to the Mt. Dew Action Sports Tour at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland.  We saw some sick bmx vert and skateboarding park prelims.  We met Jamie Bestwick and he said he was a disc golfer too.  The amount of hype, professionalism, spectatorship that those extreme athletes endure is something we only dream of.  It was a sweet experience.  Hopefully we can go to another sports tour somewhere down the road.  Thanks Derrick of “Chains” it was great.

Putt-Putt in Sweden
One evening while in northern Sweden, Ken Climo, the Brinsters and myself were invited to play some Swedish putt-putt golf with Daniel Strandberg, and some other natives.  We were psyched because who wants to pass up a game of putting.  Although, Swedish putt-putt is much different than how we play in the States.   First off, the ball is not a golf ball.  Rather, it is hard like a foosball only not as bouncy.  The course is kind of indescribable.  Only one person can go at a time, and when it was your turn you were forced to make a hole in one or try again, because the ball would roll right back to where it started if you missed.  There were no penalty strokes, you were just hitting two from the tee again, and so on.  If you don’t make it on the seventh try, you get a seven on the hole and you move on.  I managed to only get two sevens!  Imagine trying to hit a target 20-30 feet uphill and having to hole it.  It was great fun and provided us with a lot of laughs.  Of course, we were crushed by the Swede, but if you are ever there, be sure to play putt-putt golf.

Ball Golf in Japan
After The Japan Open, we needed to have a non-disc golf related activity for the day.  A large group of us were allowed to swing the clubs on the Robert Trent Jones’ designed Nasu Highlands Golf Course.  Usually it would be out of most of our leagues, but at only 10% of the regular green fees, we couldn’t pass it up.  We played best-ball in teams, and Climo was my partner.  I had so much fun hacking my way through the course.  Climo and Kevin McCoy made some really nice shots that day.  The course was above my skill level, but I have been learning over the last year, so I made some decent shot and one particularly nice putt.  I can’t wait for 2010 when I get the opportunity to play the epic course again.

So those were a few of the activities I got to enjoy while pursuing my Frisbee dream this year.  It has been an unbelievable year.  It is still surprising to me that I am still managing to set new goals and achieve them, in my personal life and in disc golf.
